Nosotros los pobres / We the Poor
The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema
A Programme of the National Museum Cinmathque
Co-presented with the Mexican Embassy of Singapore
A classic popular melodrama of the urban underclass, Nosotros los pobres became the cinematic source material for virtually an entire genre of films set in the outlying quarters of the city. These marginal urban zones were typified as the place where the degradation of poverty mingles with the dignity of humble workers who, in true melodramatic fashion, can laugh through their tears because they believe in a merciful God. Screen legend Pedro Infante plays Pepe el Toro, a humble, widowed carpenter who takes care of his daughter Chachita (Evita Muoz). His life is complicated: he is engaged to Celia (Blanca Estela Pavn), his mother is blind and paralysed, and his aunt is consumptive. Tragedy comes when Pepe is falsely accused of robbery and murder, and sent to jail.
About Ismael Rodrguez
Born in Mexico City, 19 October 1917; died in Mexico City, 7 August 2004. The Rodrguez family emigrated to Los Angeles in 1926, where Ismael's elder brothers, Roberto and Joselito, experimented with a sound system of their own invention. They return to Mexico in 1931, while Antonio Moreno's Santa (date) was in production, and Ismael obtained a walk-on part. He acted in several films, did technical jobs (especially with sound crews), founded a production company with his brothers (Pelculas Rodrguez) and made his directorial debut in 1942. In the late 40s and early 50s, he contributed to the consecration of Pedro Infante's fame with the trilogy Nosotros los pobres (1947), Ustedes los ricos (1948) and Pepe el Toro (1952).
